The Darkness Sings: The Church’s Unfinished Symphony
August 16 @ 3:00 pm - August 19 @ 5:00 pm$180
The history of Western Christianity is a racialized history with biblical images of light and dark mapped positively and negatively to race: whiteness and blackness. The Rev. Jemonde Taylor examines how well-intentioned theological practices contribute to or re-instantiate the exclusionary power of race in U.S. society. Some Christian practices around worship and spiritual formation re-inscribe racism instead of disrupting racism. Conference attendees will examine the biblical imagery around darkness, experience worship in the Ethiopian Christian tradition, and study the writings of the African American mystic, the Rev. Howard Thurman, and receive insight from the African monastic tradition.
