Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon (EMO) is a 48-year-old nonprofit built on a unique upstream/downstream approach. Downstream we have eight direct service programs focused on refugees, immigrants, the houseless, chronically ill, hungry and abused. Our downstream programs meet the immediate and pressing needs of our clients, while upstream we work to address the systemic issues that create these needs. Our upstream work involves public policy, climate justice advocacy, education and coalition building.
We are seeking a highly conscientious individual to be our new Finance Assistant. This person will be responsible for a wide variety of tasks in assisting with the financial operations of EMO and its nearly $6 million budget.

PURPOSE: To support the Finance Department to ensure the timeliness and accuracy of the financial and accounting functions, and to help with audits.
ACCOUNTABILITY: To the mission and goals of Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon (EMO) as determined by the Board of Directors, and as administered by the President and his/her delegates.
REPORTS TO: Director of Finance
DIRECT REPORTS: None
LOCATION: EMO’s central office and other sites as needed. Some tasks can be accomplished remotely.
CLASSIFICATION: Non-exempt, 20 hours per week.
BENEFITS: Salary range starts at $16.45 per hour. All regular employees (does not include on-call or temporary) are eligible for vacation, holidays, sick leave, 401(k) retirement plan, employee assistance program and employee trainings. Employees in exempt positions or non-exempt positions that are 20 hours per week or more, also receive medical, dental, disability and life insurance, per eligibility requirements.
Tasks can include:
- Maintain grant documents both electronically and physically.
- Create invoices as needed.
- Monitor that necessary reports are filed – narrative and financial.
- Maintain spreadsheets needed for audits.
Employee files & payroll:
- Backup for payroll processing.
- Maintain employee files – ensure that correct documents are included and filing as needed.
- Maintain spreadsheets for audits, programs and other needs.
- Assist in audits – pull material, scan/copy for auditor use, cleanup after completion.
- Backup for data entry (transactions).
General Assistant Tasks:
- Help meet the general administrative needs of the Finance Department.
- Prepare documents for staff, auditors and/or grantors.
- Project management
- Various organizational projects.
QUALIFICATIONS: Ability to work within the mission, vision and ethics of EMO, and maintain an understanding of the services provided by the programs and projects of EMO.
KNOWLEDGE: Advanced knowledge of MS Excel spreadsheet software; Intermediate experience with Office 365 Suite; Basic understanding of finance, accounting and/or bookkeeping; Basic understanding of payroll functions.
SKILLS: Extremely comfortable working with a variety of tasks and people; High-level organization and prioritization skills and ability to maintain a calm, professional demeanor; Meticulous.
EFFORT: Computer software skills and experience; Ability to operate general office equipment; Work at a desk using phone and computer up to eight hours a day; Preference for working in a team environment.
RESPONSIBILITY: Acute attention to detail and accuracy; Ability to work collaboratively and without close supervision.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Ability to work in a respectful manner with people of diverse ethnicity, socio-economic circumstances, religion, culture and sexual orientation; High tolerance for ambiguity and change.
- Experience with bookkeeping, accounting or finance.
- Experience with MIP accounting software or other non-QuickBooks software.
- ADP Payroll experience.
- Prior experience with government grants including audits.
