This is a worldwide initiative of Church World Service. \nNo one in this world should be hungry. That’s why the CROP Hunger Walk is more than just a gathering of people in a place. We’re part of a movement\, taking steps and raising funds together to provide meals for those in our own community who need them — and supporting programs that create greater food security in communities all around the world. \nPlease join us in the fight against hunger! The steps we take and funds we raise will make a difference in the lives of others. \nAbout the CROP Hunger Walk: If we work together\, we can end world hunger. DESCRIPTION:In an act of interfaith solidarity\, a group of faith leaders in the greater Portland/Vancouver metro area is inviting you to join them for a visible People of Faith presence at the Portland No Kings rally and march on Saturday\, Oct. 18. \nGiven the rise of Christian nationalism that is fueling the growing autocracy of our times\, it is critical that this national No Kings event has a strong\, visible and diverse interfaith presence to demonstrate disciplined nonviolent resistance. Citizens in our country and others around the world must know that there are millions of people of faith working in a multitude of ways: to love and care for the poorest\, most vulnerable people in our land; to create a more just and peaceful society; and to preserve a free and open democracy. \nOne of the keynote speakers for the Portland event will be The Rev. Dr. Mark Knutson\, a longtime activist and faith leader in the local nonviolent resistance movement. Together\, as a united community of interfaith leaders\, we will march under a large “People of Faith” banner. Clergy are invited to wear religious attire and others are invited to identify themselves with signs\, banners or whatever is appropriate for your tradition. \nSCHEDULE: \n\n\n\n10:30 a.m.: People of faith will gather at Pioneer Courthouse Square near a purple pillar-like banner reading FAITH for a short interfaith program and service.\n11:30 a.m.: We march together behind a People of Faith: Standing Up for Compassion\, Truth and Justice banner to the Battleship Memorial on Waterfront Park.\nNoon: Large No Kings event (speakers\, music\, etc.) at the Battleship Memorial on Waterfront Park.\n1 p.m.: March through the streets of downtown. DESCRIPTION:At Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon’s 2025 Collins Lecture\, we will explore the duty and responsibility of faith leaders to protect the human rights of all people and what that looks like specifically for our LGBTQIA2S+ neighbors. Our guest speakers from the faith community will share their unique perspectives on LGBTQIA2S+ rights (see speakers below). Following a brief presentation from each speaker\, they will engage in a facilitated question and answer session. \nLOCATION\nFor the first time ever\, the Collins Lecture will be held outside of the Portland metro area at the Pearson Auditorium at the Pendleton Center for the Arts in Pendleton\, Ore. This reflects EMO’s commitment to be a statewide organization\, reaching beyond the Willamette Valley and focusing further on rural-urban equity in Oregon. Previously\, she served at St. Michael & All Angels Episcopal Church as the first woman and openly gay rector of the parish.\nAri Grubner (he/him) is the pastor of Grant Park Church in northeast Portland. As an openly gay minister in the American Baptist community\, Ari is determined to amplify\, honor\, and celebrate the voices of those traditionally excluded from participating in the full life and community of the Church.\nBrad Harper (he/him) is a professor and assistant dean of the School of Biblical and Theological Studies at Jessup University (Multnomah University). He is the co-author with his son Drew of “Space at the Table: Conversations between an Evangelical Theologian and His Gay Son.”\nAaron Ridings (he/they) is a nonprofit executive and subject matter expert on K-12 education\, LGBTQIA2S+ and Indigenous issues and is currently a 2025 Pahara Institute Fellow and Executive Consultant. SUMMARY:Dismantling the Doctrine of Discovery
DESCRIPTION:DISMANTLING THE DOCTRINE OF DISCOVERY: HOW DID THE AMERICAN CHURCH BECOME SO BROKEN? \nFor more than 500 years\, the Doctrine of Discovery instituted by Pope Nicolas and others has justified slavery\, wars of conquest\, genocide\, and the dehumanization of millions—and in the name of Christ. Today\, we live with the deeply ingrained systems which were based on this legal theory. \nGregg Neel and Junha Kim will present a seven-week exploration of this doctrine and its effects upon the church\, specifically the American Church. His timely topic will be care for the marginalized as found in Hebrew Scripture and tradition. \nA key leader of Portland’s Jewish community\, Rabbi Cahana has led a steady response to poverty in the region\, including using the building where he works to host people experiencing homelessness when the weather turns dangerous. \n“Hebrew teaching on welcoming the stranger and caring for the widow and orphan is the supporting structure for Western culture’s finest moments\,” says Natalie Wood\, executive director of Catholic Charities of Oregon. \nIn 2006\, Rabbi Cahana became the 18th Senior Rabbi for Congregation Beth Israel. He had led synagogues in the Midwest and the East Coast previously. His aim in each place has been to create vibrant and inclusive Jewish communities. He serves on local inter-religious councils and is a past president of the Oregon Board of Rabbis. Rabbi Cahana is highly engaged in social action\, embracing the concept of Tikkun Olam (repairing the world) to make our community and nation better. He serves on the leadership team of Lift Every Voice Oregon\, an interfaith movement to pass gun safety legislation in Oregon. \nSnacks will be served. DESCRIPTION:On Holocaust Remembrance Day\, First Christian Church in Portland is hosting a panel presentation entitled NEVER AGAIN. The main speaker\, David Fuks\, is the son of Nazi concentration camp survivors. The Rev. Dr. Rodney Page (former director of EMO and Church World Service) is facilitating a panel and Q&A with four speakers – each briefly addressing an area of hate against targeted groups and how\, as people of faith\, we can respond with hope and action. \nThere will also be a very tasty\, traditional Ethiopian lunch buffet as a special treat. \nPanel presentation begins at 12:15 p.m. \,and the program itself is free\, though advance registration for seating numbers is appreciated. \nTickets for lunch (at 11:30 a.m.) are $16 online or $15 if purchased from the church office before next Wednesday. \nQuestions?
