A third wave of liberation theology turns to the lived experience of people already facing global violence as a testimony of life in the face of death. These communities draw on emerging and ancient spiritualities that grow out of their contexts. DESCRIPTION:Join people of faith across Oregon – and beyond – in holding a Criminal Justice Sabbath on the weekend of July 12-14\, 2019.\nIf you can’t join in on that weekend\, host a Criminal Justice Sabbath any day – and let us know when you do\, at cosa@emoregon.org! \nCriminal Justice Sabbath is a time for faith communities to lift up ways the justice system impacts us all. It is a day of worship dedicated to hearing the stories of those impacted directly by the justice system\, and to consider our shared responsibility to help healing take place. It is a day to make connections between our faith traditions and the current legal system we are part of. \nIn our religious communities\, we realize that the labels used by the justice system (“victim\,” “offender\,” “inmate\,” etc.) do not fully capture our experiences as humans. Our communities have crime survivors and perpetrators of crime; they have family members of the incarcerated and staff who work in corrections and the courts. SUMMARY:Emergency Training for Faith Communities in Response to Violent Extremism
DESCRIPTION:Caution: Violent extremism is rising! Is your congregation safe?\n\n\nChurch\, synagogue\, mosque\, temple\, and other congregational leaders and security departments are urged to attend this special emergency training\, briefing\, and active shooter safety presentation to prepare places of worship for potential attacks and violent extremism\, such as the shooting at the Chabad of Poway in San Diego and the massacres at Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh\, Christchurch Mosques in New Zealand\, and Emmanuel AME Church in Charleston. \n\n\nThe FBI\, US Attorney’s Office\, Portland Police Bureau\, and other authorities will provide the most current information\, data\, and tools available. The training is free and open to all leaders from houses of worship. \n\nLaw enforcement will present crucial and potentially life-saving information and surveilled intelligence about specific trends and potential threats. Notwithstanding existing measures and personnel a facility may already have in place\, including off-duty officers\, these authorities have up-to-date information and resources needed to bolster current security efforts. Both organizations work closely together to provide vital programs & services to individuals living with HIV in the Portland metro area. \nEMO’s HIV Day Center\, celebrating its 27th anniversary this year\, is the oldest multi-service drop in center for low income individuals infected and affected by HIV in the United States. The Center serves approximately 300 people yearly\, providing them with two hot meals a day\, information and referral services\, computer and internet access\, phones\, shower and laundry facilities as well as volunteer professionals who provide services such as massage therapy\, acupuncture and haircuts. \nThe Daily Bread Express program of the HIV Day Center delivers weekly meals and supplemental groceries to more than 60 homebound individuals. \nPartnership Project is entering its 24th year of providing critical services to HIV positive individuals in the Portland Metro area. Last year 700 people living with HIV were served through our HIV programs. SUMMARY:Lift Every Voice Oregon Rally Day
DESCRIPTION:At this rally\, we are crying out for common-sense gun safety measures to make our communities safer. Lift Every Voice Oregon calls on the Oregon State Legislature to pass legislation to ban the future sale of assault weapons and large-capacity gun magazines. \nStudents are back in class\, but our work is just beginning. During this short week of Legislative Days\, we call on our state leaders to help make Oregon a safer place to live\, learn\, grow\, and graduate without fear. \nThe rally will include music and speakers on the steps of the Capitol Building. Talking points and training tips for legislative visits will be available at the rally and online. Schedule a visit with your legislator before or after the rally. DESCRIPTION:This free event is a forum exploring the relationship between our faith and the protection of worker rights\, and the effect of declining labor unions on income inequality. \nDr. Martin Hart-Landsberg\, Professor Emeritus of Economics at Lewis and Clark University\, is the keynote speaker. The agenda includes workers telling their stories about how people of faith have effectively advocated for worker rights in labor disputes\, a faith response by Fr. Jack Mosbrucker\, and a Q&A panel. Information and resources about how to get involved in worker rights and social justice actions will be available.

SUMMARY:Our Voice\, Our World\, Our Future (Premiere Screening)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free premiere screening of “Our Voice\, Our World\, Our Future” — a short 20-minute film that explores the effects of climate change on low income communities in Portland\, Ore. \nOften unrecognized as a serious social concern in our region\, the film focuses on how climate change impacts the lives of Portland’s most impoverished and vulnerable people. Featuring two senior year projects\, “Our Voice\, Our World Our Future” gives voice to five senior high school students from Rosemary Anderson Alternative High School\, as they interweave their own stories with observations from community members and commentary from local healthcare professionals and emergency services specialists. A Q & A session with filmmaker Jane Turville and the students will follow the screening. \nThis project is made as a partnership between Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon\, Rosemary Anderson High School and Wagging Tale Productions\, LLC. We genuinely thank the East Multnomah Soil & Water Conservation District for generously supporting this project through their grant program. \nLimited seating. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; screening begins at 7 p.m.
