DESCRIPTION:DISMANTLING THE DOCTRINE OF DISCOVERY: HOW DID THE AMERICAN CHURCH BECOME SO BROKEN? \nFor more than 500 years\, the Doctrine of Discovery instituted by Pope Nicolas and others has justified slavery\, wars of conquest\, genocide\, and the dehumanization of millions—and in the name of Christ. Today\, we live with the deeply ingrained systems which were based on this legal theory. \nGregg Neel and Junha Kim will present a seven-week exploration of this doctrine and its effects upon the church\, specifically the American Church. DESCRIPTION:Rabbi Michael Cahana\, Senior Rabbi for Portland’s oldest synagogue\, will give a free talk on Sept. 19 at Catholic Charities of Oregon\, 2740 SE Powell Boulevard in Portland. His timely topic will be care for the marginalized as found in Hebrew Scripture and tradition. \nA key leader of Portland’s Jewish community\, Rabbi Cahana has led a steady response to poverty in the region\, including using the building where he works to host people experiencing homelessness when the weather turns dangerous. \n“Hebrew teaching on welcoming the stranger and caring for the widow and orphan is the supporting structure for Western culture’s finest moments\,” says Natalie Wood\, executive director of Catholic Charities of Oregon. \nIn 2006\, Rabbi Cahana became the 18th Senior Rabbi for Congregation Beth Israel. He had led synagogues in the Midwest and the East Coast previously. His aim in each place has been to create vibrant and inclusive Jewish communities. He serves on local inter-religious councils and is a past president of the Oregon Board of Rabbis. Rabbi Cahana is highly engaged in social action\, embracing the concept of Tikkun Olam (repairing the world) to make our community and nation better. He serves on the leadership team of Lift Every Voice Oregon\, an interfaith movement to pass gun safety legislation in Oregon. \nSnacks will be served. EMO is excited to provide this opportunity to learn and to create space for dialogue in our community. \n2024 COLLINS LECTURERS\nAmbassador Cecilia A.M. Adeng is a South Sudanese national. Her country descended into a civil war from 2013 to 2020\, enduring rampant human rights abuses\, forced displacement and ethnic massacres. South Sudan continues to recover from the war while experiencing ongoing and systemic ethnic violence. This February\, Adeng was appointed as the Permanent Representative of the Republic of South Sudan Mission to the United Nations—the country’s first female representative to the UN. From 2018 to 2023\, she was Deputy Permanent Representative of South Sudan’s Mission to the United Nations in New York. Adeng obtained a master’s degree in public administration from Howard University\, Washington\, D.C.\, and a bachelor’s degree in political science from Fisk University\, Nashville\, Tenn. \nJuan Gerardo Antonio Guaidó is a Venezuelan opposition politician. In 2018\, the Venezuelan National Assembly elected Guaidó as its new leader. In January 2019\, after the allegedly fraudulent 2018 election of Nicolás Maduro left the country without a president\, Guaidó was sworn in as Interim President of the Republic of Venezuela. He was recognized as the Interim President by 60 countries and served in that role until December 2022. Guaidó studied industrial engineering at the Universidad Católica Andrés Bello (UCAB) in Caracas and went on to earn two graduate degrees in public administration. At UCAB\, he was one of the founders of the Venezuelan Student Movement. Guaidó also helped establish the “Voluntad Popular” party in 2009\, which pledged to “build a more secure\, united and prosperous country where everyone will be entitled to all rights.” \nThe annual Collins Lecture/Summit explores issues related to religion and social ethics. These have been a signature event of EMO and its predecessor organization the Portland Council of Churches since 1967. The event is funded by The Collins Foundation. She has also taught Water Pollution Law and Environmental Ethics. Mel is currently using her campaigning\, advocacy and coalition building experience in support of statewide environmental initiatives in Florida and Oregon. \nKhanh Pham\, Oregon Representative (House District 46)\, is a dedicated advocate for climate\, energy\, and the environment\, serving her second term as the first Vietnamese American legislator in Oregon. DESCRIPTION:CROP Hunger Walks are community-based walk fundraising events held in cities and towns across the United States\, created to support the global mission of Church World Service\, a faith-based organization transforming communities around the globe through just and sustainable responses to hunger\, poverty\, displacement and disaster. After a CROP Hunger Walk ends\, 25% of the funds raised is returned to the host community to support local hunger fighting efforts.
