W.J. Mark Knutson. These three faith leaders served as chief petitioners of IP 17 and catalyzed the signature process to get a gun safety measure on Oregon’s ballot this fall. LEVO is an interfaith organization of Christian\, Buddhist\, Muslim\, Jewish and Native American spiritual leaders committed to reducing gun violence.\n“Emerging Leader” award will be presented to Taylor Stewart\, founder and executive director of the Oregon Remembrance Project. His organization helps communities in Oregon unearth stories of injustice and engage in the necessary truth telling and repair required to reconcile instances of historical harm. On Juneteenth 2021\, Stewart led efforts to dedicate a historical marker about the 1902 racial lynching of Alonzo Tucker in Coos Bay\, Ore.\n\n\n\nENTERTAINMENT BY MICHELLE ALANY\nViolinist and vocalist Michelle Alany is a dynamic international performer and ambassador of world folk traditions. Deeply inspired by traditional music\, she draws from a wealth of diverse influences and creates original folk songs in the vein of her fresh interpretations of Sephardic\, Klezmer\, Balkan as well as American folk music explorations. DESCRIPTION:CROP Hunger Walks are community-based walk fundraising events held in cities and towns across the United States\, created to support the global mission of Church World Service\, a faith-based organization transforming communities around the globe through just and sustainable responses to hunger\, poverty\, displacement and disaster. After a CROP Hunger Walk ends\, 25% of the funds raised is returned to the host community to support local hunger fighting efforts. Since then\, CROP Hunger Walk events have been held in hundreds of communities\, large and small\, raising millions of dollars to eradicate hunger and poverty. \nGet Involved\nHunger is one of the greatest injustices facing our world\, but it doesn’t have to be this way. She has spent many years exploring the relationship between faith and climate activism. She has engaged in disruptive nonviolent civil disobedience as a priest and sought ways to help people face and respond to the climate and ecological crisis through her Zen teaching. \nBritt Conroy serves as the Director of Public Policy & Environmental Advocacy for Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon\, where he leads the organization’s advocacy efforts to make Oregon a more welcoming state to immigrants and refugees\, provide housing for the unhoused\, address climate change and strengthen anti-poverty programs. \n\n\n\nSign up to receive EMO’s Newsletters.\n\n\n\n\nPeter Fargo is on a mission “to join with others and get in the way of runaway climate change\, for my kids\, my community\, and my God.” In 2019\, Peter wrote a book called A Million Prayers to Solve Our Climate Crisis. Peter formed the Climate Rights Campaign in 2023 to recognize everyone’s right to a stable climate in the Oregon Constitution. \n\n\n\nStatewide Organizing Meeting and Climate Vigil on May 4\, 2024 in Salem\, OR. She is one of the founding members of OCERA and lives with her family in Linn County. \nMel Martin is an attorney and former judge advocate (JAG) in the U.S. Marine Corps. Since retiring in 2014\, she has used her advocacy skills for anti-corruption efforts\, clean water initiatives\, and environmental conservation\, serving in multiple leadership and board director roles. She has also taught Water Pollution Law and Environmental Ethics. Mel is currently using her campaigning\, advocacy and coalition building experience in support of statewide environmental initiatives in Florida and Oregon. \nKhanh Pham\, Oregon Representative (House District 46)\, is a dedicated advocate for climate\, energy\, and the environment\, serving her second term as the first Vietnamese American legislator in Oregon. She plays a pivotal role in the House Climate\, Energy and Environment Committee and the Joint Committees on Transportation and Full Ways & Means. In 2023\, Khanh secured significant funding for climate action and green infrastructure projects. She was recently recognized as the Environmental Champion of the Year by OLCV. \n\n\n\nThe COAL Act (Clean Oregon Assets Legislation) is House Bill 4083 and now available to track on OLIS. He serves as a commander in the Oregon National Guard\, is married to Beaverton Mayor Lacey Beaty\, and has two daughters. Dr. Beaty will share his personal story as a youth who experienced homelessness \nROOTED IN COMMUNITY\nA program of Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon\, Second Home connects volunteer host homes with unaccompanied high school students experiencing homelessness. At Second Home\, it is our privilege to accompany students as they grow in the midst of community where they are needed\, appreciated and given an opportunity to thrive. DESCRIPTION:Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon (EMO) invites you to join us for the 2024 Collins Lecture\, “Faith and Politics in a Divided World.” Two leaders from the Global South will engage us in conversations around leadership\, faith and politics from their unique perspectives. The event will be hosted at the University of Portland on Aug. 8 at 7 p.m. Use the form below to reserve tickets. \nOur lecturers will be Ambassador Cecilia Adeng\, South Sudan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations\, and Juan Guaidó\, Venezuelan opposition leader and former Interim President of Venezuela. See their bios below.  \nRare is the opportunity to sit in conversation with global leaders of this stature. Our hope is to engage in conversation about how a leader who identifies as a person of faith draws from their faith in the face of adversity. EMO is excited to provide this opportunity to learn and to create space for dialogue in our community. \n2024 COLLINS LECTURERS\nAmbassador Cecilia A.M. Adeng is a South Sudanese national. Her country descended into a civil war from 2013 to 2020\, enduring rampant human rights abuses\, forced displacement and ethnic massacres. South Sudan continues to recover from the war while experiencing ongoing and systemic ethnic violence. This February\, Adeng was appointed as the Permanent Representative of the Republic of South Sudan Mission to the United Nations—the country’s first female representative to the UN. From 2018 to 2023\, she was Deputy Permanent Representative of South Sudan’s Mission to the United Nations in New York. Adeng obtained a master’s degree in public administration from Howard University\, Washington\, D.C.\, and a bachelor’s degree in political science from Fisk University\, Nashville\, Tenn. \nJuan Gerardo Antonio Guaidó is a Venezuelan opposition politician. In 2018\, the Venezuelan National Assembly elected Guaidó as its new leader. In January 2019\, after the allegedly fraudulent 2018 election of Nicolás Maduro left the country without a president\, Guaidó was sworn in as Interim President of the Republic of Venezuela. He was recognized as the Interim President by 60 countries and served in that role until December 2022. Guaidó studied industrial engineering at the Universidad Católica Andrés Bello (UCAB) in Caracas and went on to earn two graduate degrees in public administration. At UCAB\, he was one of the founders of the Venezuelan Student Movement. Guaidó also helped establish the “Voluntad Popular” party in 2009\, which pledged to “build a more secure\, united and prosperous country where everyone will be entitled to all rights.” \nThe annual Collins Lecture/Summit explores issues related to religion and social ethics. These have been a signature event of EMO and its predecessor organization the Portland Council of Churches since 1967. The event is funded by The Collins Foundation. SUMMARY:The Roots of Care: Caring for the marginalized in Hebrew Scripture and tradition
DESCRIPTION:Rabbi Michael Cahana\, Senior Rabbi for Portland’s oldest synagogue\, will give a free talk on Sept. 19 at Catholic Charities of Oregon\, 2740 SE Powell Boulevard in Portland. His timely topic will be care for the marginalized as found in Hebrew Scripture and tradition. \nA key leader of Portland’s Jewish community\, Rabbi Cahana has led a steady response to poverty in the region\, including using the building where he works to host people experiencing homelessness when the weather turns dangerous. \n“Hebrew teaching on welcoming the stranger and caring for the widow and orphan is the supporting structure for Western culture’s finest moments\,” says Natalie Wood\, executive director of Catholic Charities of Oregon. \nIn 2006\, Rabbi Cahana became the 18th Senior Rabbi for Congregation Beth Israel. He had led synagogues in the Midwest and the East Coast previously. His aim in each place has been to create vibrant and inclusive Jewish communities. He serves on local inter-religious councils and is a past president of the Oregon Board of Rabbis. Rabbi Cahana is highly engaged in social action\, embracing the concept of Tikkun Olam (repairing the world) to make our community and nation better. He serves on the leadership team of Lift Every Voice Oregon\, an interfaith movement to pass gun safety legislation in Oregon. \nSnacks will be served.
