SUMMARY:Dining Out For Life
DESCRIPTION:Dine out (or take out) and support our partner restaurants! \nDining Out For Life comes to Portland every April. This year’s event did not happen as planned due to the pandemic. Instead\, we are holding a different event during the week of September 14\, focused on supporting our restaurants. We want to support them all the time\, but especially during this week\, as we highlight our generous restaurants who are struggling right now. We hope Dining Out For Life will be back in regular form next year\, but for now let’s show our restaurants our love! \nWe are not asking our partner restaurants to contribute to Dining Out For Life Portland this year. This event is strictly to support them. However\, if you feel moved and are able\, we will accept donations to Dining Out For Life Portland with the proceeds going directly to EMO’s HIV Day Center and OHSU’s Partnership Project. Our services have continued during COVID\, as have the needs of our clients. Please use the donation form below. \nThank you to our Dining Out For Life Sponsors: National sponsors Suburu and Ponaman Healthcare Consulting; local sponsors Grapevine Outdoor\, Lamar Advertising\, N2 Publishing\, The Oregonian\, Portland Monthly\, and Schoenfeld & Schoenfeld P.C. \nA special thank you to our Honorary Chair Rose City Pride Bands. \nAnd thank you to our partner restaurants: 3 Doors Down\, Bar Carlo\, Bridges Cafe and Catering\, Extracto Roastery & Coffeehouse\, Ford Food & Drink (now closed)\, Hale Pele\, McMenamins (17 locations)\, Peter’s Bar & Grill\, The Pie Spot\, Portofino\, Red Sauce\, Redwood\, and Rose and Thistle. \nWe also ask that you support all Black Owned Restaurants as you are able by dining in or taking out. View list. \nLearn more about Dining Out For Life.

SUMMARY:2020 Collins Summit: Shalom in Divided Times
DESCRIPTION:It’s no secret we are living in unprecedented and divided times. Racial unrest\, political tensions and COVID-19 have impacted nearly every aspect of our lives. What do shalom and unity look like in 2020? Shalom is a Hebrew word that means wholeness\, harmony and peace. It’s a complex idea\, often oversimplified\, similar to the way “unity” becomes a euphemism for sameness. \nThrough a virtual format\, we will explore these racial\, political and social divisions\, asking how we bring our whole selves to the table and stay engaged in light of our differences\, not in spite of them. \nThe Summit will include a lecture from Lisa Sharon Harper\, a live Q&A\, and the opportunity to hear from members of the Common Table and their important work. \n  \nFEATURING \nLisa Sharon Harper\nA prolific speaker\, writer and activist\, Ms. Harper is the founder and president of FreedomRoad.us. She is one of today’s leading voices on the topics of poverty\, racial and gender justice\, and transformational civic engagement. Learn more. \nThe Common Table\nAn Oregon-wide collection of interfaith leaders who have committed to learning more about one another\, trusting one another and standing together—even in the midst of real differences. Learn from this groundbreaking effort to cultivate shalom and create real unity. Learn more. \n  \nONLINE FORMAT\nWatch on your computer\, phone\, tablet or smart TV.\n7 to 8:30 p.m.\, Wednesday\, Nov. 18\, 2020.\nRegistration fee: $10 (scholarships available). \n  \nABOUT THE COLLINS SUMMIT\nSince 1967\, the Collins Summit (previously the Collins Lecture) has explored the intersection of faith\, ethics and public life. This has been a signature event of Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon and its predecessor organization\, the Portland Council of Churches. The event is funded in part by the Collins Foundation. \n  \nCOSPONSORS\nCosponsors to date include: American Friends Service Committee; Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Oregon & SW Idaho; Episcopal Diocese of Oregon; Heritage Bank; The Rev. Susan M. Kintner; Muslim Educational Trust; Neil Kelly Co.; Oregon-Idaho Conference of the United Methodist Church; Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary; Sunriver Christian Fellowship; Vancouver Avenue First Baptist Church. \nIf your organization or faith community would like be a cosponsor of the Collins Summit\, please fill out the Sponsorship Agreement Form. SUMMARY:Creation Justice Summit: Our kinship with Oregon’s sacred waters
DESCRIPTION:Senator Jeff Merkley\nThe eighth Creation Justice Summit (formerly the Earth Care Summit) will bring together people of faith and goodwill from across Oregon to learn\, connect and develop a shared vision for creation justice in 2021. \nTitled “Our Kinship with Oregon’s Sacred Waters\,” the summit will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Columbia River Watershed Pastoral Letter and explore the faith community’s role in caring for our watersheds. Participants are encouraged to gather water from your local waterway to have present during the summit (e.g.\, go dip a jar of water out of your nearest creek\, river\, lake or ocean). \nPresented by EMO’s Creation Justice and Oregon Interfaith Power & Light (OIPL)\, the virtual event will feature plenary sessions from inspiring presenters and workshops focused on organizing\, advocacy\, activism and education. Senator Jeff Merkley will give the closing address. \nSee schedule below or download the complete schedule. View bios of panelists and workshop speakers. \nREGISTER: $20 general\, $10 students\, scholarships available. \n\n \nSCHEDULE\nOpening Session (1 – 1:15 p.m.)\n> Welcome by Cherice Bock.\n> Water in the Qur’an by Imam Abdulah Polovina.\n> Prayer of Confession and Thanksgiving for the Gift of Water by The Rev. Linda Jaramillo.\n> “Draw Water in Joy” by Rabbi Benjamin Barnett. \nPlenary Panel (1:15 – 2:15 p.m.)\n“The Columbia River Watershed Pastoral Letter at Twenty: Reflections and Recommitment.”\nModerator: The Rev. Mark Brocker. Panelists: Fr. Chuck Lienert; Wilbur Slockish\, Jr.; and Sr. Joan Brown. \nWorkshops (2:25 – 3:25 p.m.) \n\n\n\nOrganizing Green Teams and Regional Circles\, led by Cherice Bock and The Rev. John Pitney. Wondering how to build or strengthen a green team in your faith community\, or how to connect with other people of faith around the state also working on caring for this planet with love and justice? This workshop will offer practical tips for organizing a group in your faith community\, connecting with others across the state through Green Circles\, and setting goals for greenhouse gas reduction\, education\, advocacy and other aspects of working toward a more sustainable world with people of faith.\nFaith-based Climate Advocacy in the 2021 Legislative Session\, led by Aaron Salzman. Changing our public policies can have the biggest potential impact on collective ability to live sustainably\, so speaking up about just and sustainable policy changes is an important aspect of creation justice. Become familiar with some of the climate and environmental policy priorities EMO and Oregon Interfaith Power & Light are advocating for during the 2021 Oregon Legislative Session. Learn more about these policies and consider a faith-based response from your faith tradition. Find out how to get involved in climate and environmental policy advocacy with EMO/OIPL.\nCreation Justice in Worship and Community Life\, led by The Rev. Solveig Nilsen-Goodin. Receive resources and ideas for incorporating creation justice elements into your worship services\, liturgies\, and faith community events.\nWater Is Life: Activism in Oregon\, with moderator Richenda Fairhurst; panelists Cozcacuauhtli Itzpapaloatl Tracy Molina\, Don and Alona Steinke\, and Patty Hine. “Water is life” is a phrase many of us can connect with in various religious and spiritual traditions\, and it has been used by Indigenous environmental and climate activists — “water protectors” — as they work to block fossil fuel pipelines from crossing Native lands and the waterways we all share. Four panelists will share their experiences of environmental activism in Oregon\, the Pacific Northwest and beyond as Indigenous water protectors\, allies and people of faith upholding our kinship with Turtle Island’s sacred waters.\nWatershed Care & Faith Communities\, led by Dr. Steven Kolmes. The Columbia River Watershed Pastoral Letter\, which we are discussing and commemorating in the opening plenary panel\, refers to a broad regional watershed many of us in Oregon live in\, but what is a watershed? How does it function\, and what is the role of faith communities in caring for it? Learn from Dr. Kolmes about the basics of watersheds\, what environmental and climate issues to be aware of in your watershed\, and groups your faith community might consider partnering with as you’re engaging in watershed care.\n\n\n\nClosing Session (3:30 – 4:15 p.m.)\n> Climate Policy Update for the 2021 Oregon Legislative Session\, by Britton Conroy.\n> Keynote Address by US Senator Jeff Merkley.\n> Closing Interfaith Prayer and Blessing of Oregon’s Waters\, by Imam Abdulah Polovina\, Rabbi Benjamin Barnett\, The Rev. Linda Jaramillo\, and Navneet Kaur.

SUMMARY:Kiss the Ground (film discussion)
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the 51st anniversary of Earth Day by watching the new film Kiss the Ground and discussing how to put its teachings about regenerative agriculture into practice in Oregon. People of faith all over the country are watching this film during April\, generously available for free through Interfaith Power & Light. As the film shows\, regenerating the world’s soils has the potential to rapidly stabilize Earth’s climate\, restore lost ecosystems and create abundant food supplies. The transition can restore our sense of hope while rehabilitating the planet. \nIn Oregon\, Havurah Shalom\, Ecofaith Recovery\, Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon\, and Oregon Interfaith Power & Light are partnering to host a discussion about Kiss the Ground. In addition to the opportunity to dialogue about the film\, we will hold a panel discussion with those working toward regenerative agriculture in a variety of contexts in Oregon. The panel will include Kristin Ohlson\, an Oregonian who was included in the film and who authored The Soil Will Save Us; Teague Cullen\, an Oregon farmer from Sherrett Food Forest; and Jennilee Porch\, who will share about a program called Carbon Gardens through the EcoFaith Community Carbon initiative. Michael Perman will share about certifications and other tools available based on the Kiss the Ground film. \nStream the film between now and April 25\, then attend a Zoom discussion on Sunday\, April 25\, from 4 to 6 p.m. Kiss the Ground is available free starting April 10 from our friends at Interfaith Power & Light or anytime on Netflix. \nLinks to watch the film and attend the April 25 discussion will be sent when you register. SUMMARY:Treaty People Gathering: Stop Line 3 Pipeline
DESCRIPTION:EMO’s Oregon Interfaith Power & Light is helping organize an interfaith delegation to Minnesota June 5–8 for the Treaty People Gathering to stop the Line 3 pipeline. The pipeline crosses Anishinaabe land and would transport tar sands to market. \nWe rise together for treaties. We rise together for climate. We rise together for our water. We rise together for one another. As Enbridge builds Line 3 through Anishinaabe treaty land and the Mississippi Headwaters\, we continue to stand strong in our resistance. We will gather in Northern Minnesota to put our bodies on the line\, to stop construction and tell the world that the days of tar sands pipelines are over. \nLearn more and register at treatypeoplegathering.com.

SUMMARY:Day of Remembrance
DESCRIPTION:On Juneteenth this year\, many people gathered in person or online to bear witness to the death by lynching of Alonzo Tucker in Coos Bay\, Ore.\, in 1902. In partnership with the Oregon Remembrance Project and the Equal Justice Initiative\, this act of public remembrance called on people of faith to reckon with the racist legacy we inherit in the Pacific Northwest\, and the ways in which that legacy continues to live in on in subtle and blatant ways up until the present day. \nBut the larger work of truth\, repair and reconciliation continues. In this spirit\, we invite you to a state wide “Day of Remembrance” on Sunday\, Sept. 19\, 2021. Sept. 18\, 1902\, was the day of Alonzo Tucker’s lynching\, and we invite you to acknowledge this anniversary by joining us the following day to honor Alonzo Tucker’s memory through a renewed commitment to justice. \nWe invite you to participate in the following ways: \n\n\n\nFocus your worship service that weekend on the racist legacy we inherit in Oregon and the ways in which your community can acknowledge and reckon with that legacy in your local context.\nInvite people of faith in your community networks to join us online from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Sunday\, Sept. 19\, for a special “Liturgy of Remembrance.”\nConsider joining us for an informational session from 7:30 to  8:30 p.m. on Sunday\, Sept. 19\, on the upcoming “Reckoning with Racism” Learning and Discernment cohort. This new iteration of Common Table’s “Reckoning with Racism” is open to faith community teams who participated in last year’s cohort and new teams who have never engaged in this work before. All that’s required is a group of at least four committed volunteers from your faith community\, denominational body or organization. For more information contact our team at commontable@emoregon.org.\n\n\n\nYou can also email commontable@emoregon.org to RSVP for #2 & #3 above\, or to let us know if you plan on hosting a special service that weekend. We’d love to collect sermons\, liturgies\, art projects and/or other special reflections around this focus to share with others. \nWe live in a time when our history is actively being erased and re-written by some segments of our society\, and all acts of remembrance are acts of resistance.

SUMMARY:Faith Voice for Clean Air
DESCRIPTION:September is recognized by many Christians as the Season of Creation\, an opportunity to pray and care for God’s creation. On Monday\, Sept. 20\, at 6 p.m.\, EMO is hosting a public comment writing workshop to gather people of faith and assist them in sharing public comment to advocate for bold climate action.  \n\nAs part of the Oregon Climate Action Plan (Gov. Brown’s 2020 executive order on climate)\, the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is creating a new “Climate Protection Program” to regulate and cut climate pollution from some of Oregon’s top emitters to help Oregon meet our greenhouse gas reduction targets.\n\nAdvocates have pushed the DEQ to make some positive changes to the rule language\, however\, DEQ’s draft rules still fall short in a few key areas. Currently\, the DEQ is asking for public comments on its draft Climate Protection Program. For more information on this process\, click here.\n\nAt the workshop\, we’ll guide you in sharing your personal connection to climate change as a person of faith and as a citizen of Oregon. We will be discussing why it is important for the DEQ to adhere to climate science\, hold all major polluters accountable\, and invest to reduce pollution in and benefit frontline communities. As Christians\, we are called on to play a part in changing our collective response to the unprecedented threat of climate change and environmental degradation. Please join us and use your voice to speak up to the DEQ!\n\nRegister now. \nFor more information\, email khogan@emoregon.org!

SUMMARY:Oregon Faiths 4 Climate Justice
DESCRIPTION:In the lead up to COP26\,* EMO’s Oregon Interfaith Power & Light (OIPL) is organizing an Oregon Faiths 4 Climate Justice Week of Action from Oct. 15 to 18!\nAs people of faith\, it is important to care for the gift of the Earth\, our common home\, and pass on a livable planet to future generations. This is holy and sacred work and the movement is strongest when grounded in moral truth and spiritual commitment. We love our neighbors tangibly through divesting from fossil fuels. \nBelow are ways both you and your faith community can get involved in the fossil-fuel divestment movement\, encouraging state and world leaders to do the same: \n1. Create a short video about Divest Oregon with your faith community calling on state Treasurer Tobias Read to divest Oregon’s Public Employee Retirement System (PERS) from fossil fuels.\nRecord this during your worship gathering or create a special event such as an “action hour.” Send the video to us so we can compile and send them to Treasurer Read. \n2. Attend the Vigil for Divestment on Oct. 18\, 12 to 1 p.m.\n\nWorship as resistance in the manner of Quakers with our partners from Multnomah Monthly Meeting. We will meet in silence (with perhaps a few songs) outside a Wells Fargo Bank that invests in the Line 3 pipeline and other fossil fuel projects. Register below to receive more details. \nTo view a map of all the global events and/or register your own event go to GreenFaith. \n3. Call on your congregation to divest from fossil-fuel investments.\nDraft a request to move your faith community’s investments out of fossil fuel companies\, and make a plan to circulate this request and to send to the appropriate leaders. \n*The United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP26) will be occurring in Glasgow\, Scotland\, from Oct. 31 to Nov. 12\, 2021. World leaders will be making decisions about how to reduce\, mitigate\, and hopefully reverse climate change. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) most recent report made it clear that this is one of our last chances as a global community to take action to avoid even more catastrophic climate events than we are already seeing. This means we need to transition away from fossil fuels immediately.

SUMMARY:Train of Tears
DESCRIPTION:A “Train of Tears” commemoration will recall and reflect with regret one of the most painful chapters in the history of the Hood River Valley — the forced internment of Japanese-Americans. \nThe event at Riverside Community Church\, United Church of Christ\, will memorialize the date 80 years ago when more than 400 Japanese-American women\, men and children from the central Gorge were forced from their homes\, loaded into railcars at the Hood River train station\, and sent to internment camps. \nDuring and after the war\, Hood River was a flashpoint for anti-Japanese activities. Due to a concerted effort by community members\, less than 50 of those who were forcibly removed felt safe enough to return. \nThe event on May 13 will feature special guests\, music and speakers\, including Episcopal  Bishop Diana Akiyama\, who spent her childhood in the valley. A procession to the train station and installation of a peace pole will follow the ceremony. The procession will include faith leaders from throughout the area\, as well as those of Japanese ancestry. \n\n\n\n11:30 a.m. – Reception & Exhibits: Exhibits from History Museum of Hood River County and refreshments.\n12 p.m. – Program: Presentation with special guests\, music\, and speakers\, including Episcopal Bishop Diana Akiyama who grew up in Hood River.\n12:45 p.m. – Procession to Train Station: Procession will begin at Riverside Community Church\, moving to the train station for the installation of a peace pole.\n\n\n\nThis event is free and open to all members of the community.
