DESCRIPTION:Dine out (or take out) and support our partner restaurants! \nDining Out For Life comes to Portland every April. This year’s event did not happen as planned due to the pandemic. Instead\, we are holding a different event during the week of September 14\, focused on supporting our restaurants. We want to support them all the time\, but especially during this week\, as we highlight our generous restaurants who are struggling right now. We hope Dining Out For Life will be back in regular form next year\, but for now let’s show our restaurants our love! \nWe are not asking our partner restaurants to contribute to Dining Out For Life Portland this year. DESCRIPTION:Hearing the Cries: Healing Injustice brings a holistic lens to being in relationship with our justice-involved neighbors: helping people of faith and goodwill\, in the words of Bryan Stevenson\, “get proximate” with those members of our society who have lived experience of the justice system. We hope to frame participants’ understanding of the “issue” of criminal justice as a matter of faith in action. \nAs people of faith\, we know that our communities bring together people beyond the labels placed on us by the justice system and wider society. We are more than victims\, offenders or community members—we may be all three—and our congregations may include all of us. But the ways the justice system brings people together—and keeps them separate—are different from the ways that a faith community brings people together. How are we to live together as a community? How do we resolve the inherent conflict in this existence as one body of many distinct members? \nSpecifically\, we seek to empower community in Restorative Justice\, stepping up to the responsibilities it has to those in the roles of “offender” and “victim\,” and taking accountability for the harms society has perpetrated and perpetuated. These harms include those created by a justice system that distances people from their neighbors and adds layers of harm instead of resolving conflict in a just way. \nWe recognize a theology of interconnection and interdependence. Our need for one another\, in mutually beneficial and healing relationships\, happens to be at the core of pro-social thinking\, as well. We also recognize the interconnection of criminal justice issues with public health concerns\, homelessness and housing inaccessibility\, human trafficking\, trauma\, recovery\, immigration\, and more. DESCRIPTION:Join people of faith across Oregon – and beyond – in holding a Criminal Justice Sabbath on the weekend of July 12-14\, 2019.\nIf you can’t join in on that weekend\, host a Criminal Justice Sabbath any day – and let us know when you do\, at cosa@emoregon.org! \nCriminal Justice Sabbath is a time for faith communities to lift up ways the justice system impacts us all. It is a day of worship dedicated to hearing the stories of those impacted directly by the justice system\, and to consider our shared responsibility to help healing take place. It is a day to make connections between our faith traditions and the current legal system we are part of. \nIn our religious communities\, we realize that the labels used by the justice system (“victim\,” “offender\,” “inmate\,” etc.) do not fully capture our experiences as humans. Our communities have crime survivors and perpetrators of crime; they have family members of the incarcerated and staff who work in corrections and the courts. On Criminal Justice Sabbath\, we remember the unique stories of how people experience the legal system – while recognizing that we are all one community\, together. \nVisit EMO’s Criminal Justice Ministries page to download the Criminal Justice Sabbath Worship Guide 2019 for worship\, preaching\, adult education and action for a Criminal Justice Sabbath in your community. \nCriminal Justice Sabbath resources are available as a project of Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon in partnership with the Episcopal Diocese of Oregon.
