SUMMARY:Creation Justice Summit: Our kinship with Oregon’s sacred waters
DESCRIPTION:Senator Jeff Merkley\nThe eighth Creation Justice Summit (formerly the Earth Care Summit) will bring together people of faith and goodwill from across Oregon to learn\, connect and develop a shared vision for creation justice in 2021. \nTitled “Our Kinship with Oregon’s Sacred Waters\,” the summit will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Columbia River Watershed Pastoral Letter and explore the faith community’s role in caring for our watersheds. Participants are encouraged to gather water from your local waterway to have present during the summit (e.g.\, go dip a jar of water out of your nearest creek\, river\, lake or ocean). \nPresented by EMO’s Creation Justice and Oregon Interfaith Power & Light (OIPL)\, the virtual event will feature plenary sessions from inspiring presenters and workshops focused on organizing\, advocacy\, activism and education. Senator Jeff Merkley will give the closing address. \nSee schedule below or download the complete schedule. View bios of panelists and workshop speakers. \nREGISTER: $20 general\, $10 students\, scholarships available. \n\n \nSCHEDULE\nOpening Session (1 – 1:15 p.m.)\n> Welcome by Cherice Bock.\n> Water in the Qur’an by Imam Abdulah Polovina.\n> Prayer of Confession and Thanksgiving for the Gift of Water by The Rev. Linda Jaramillo.\n> “Draw Water in Joy” by Rabbi Benjamin Barnett. \nPlenary Panel (1:15 – 2:15 p.m.)\n“The Columbia River Watershed Pastoral Letter at Twenty: Reflections and Recommitment.”\nModerator: The Rev. Mark Brocker. Panelists: Fr. Chuck Lienert; Wilbur Slockish\, Jr.; and Sr. Joan Brown. \nWorkshops (2:25 – 3:25 p.m.) \n\n\n\nOrganizing Green Teams and Regional Circles\, led by Cherice Bock and The Rev. John Pitney. Wondering how to build or strengthen a green team in your faith community\, or how to connect with other people of faith around the state also working on caring for this planet with love and justice? This workshop will offer practical tips for organizing a group in your faith community\, connecting with others across the state through Green Circles\, and setting goals for greenhouse gas reduction\, education\, advocacy and other aspects of working toward a more sustainable world with people of faith.\nFaith-based Climate Advocacy in the 2021 Legislative Session\, led by Aaron Salzman. Changing our public policies can have the biggest potential impact on collective ability to live sustainably\, so speaking up about just and sustainable policy changes is an important aspect of creation justice. Become familiar with some of the climate and environmental policy priorities EMO and Oregon Interfaith Power & Light are advocating for during the 2021 Oregon Legislative Session. Learn more about these policies and consider a faith-based response from your faith tradition. Find out how to get involved in climate and environmental policy advocacy with EMO/OIPL.\nCreation Justice in Worship and Community Life\, led by The Rev. Solveig Nilsen-Goodin. Receive resources and ideas for incorporating creation justice elements into your worship services\, liturgies\, and faith community events.\nWater Is Life: Activism in Oregon\, with moderator Richenda Fairhurst; panelists Cozcacuauhtli Itzpapaloatl Tracy Molina\, Don and Alona Steinke\, and Patty Hine. “Water is life” is a phrase many of us can connect with in various religious and spiritual traditions\, and it has been used by Indigenous environmental and climate activists — “water protectors” — as they work to block fossil fuel pipelines from crossing Native lands and the waterways we all share. Four panelists will share their experiences of environmental activism in Oregon\, the Pacific Northwest and beyond as Indigenous water protectors\, allies and people of faith upholding our kinship with Turtle Island’s sacred waters.\nWatershed Care & Faith Communities\, led by Dr. Steven Kolmes. The Columbia River Watershed Pastoral Letter\, which we are discussing and commemorating in the opening plenary panel\, refers to a broad regional watershed many of us in Oregon live in\, but what is a watershed? How does it function\, and what is the role of faith communities in caring for it? Learn from Dr. Kolmes about the basics of watersheds\, what environmental and climate issues to be aware of in your watershed\, and groups your faith community might consider partnering with as you’re engaging in watershed care.\n\n\n\nClosing Session (3:30 – 4:15 p.m.)\n> Climate Policy Update for the 2021 Oregon Legislative Session\, by Britton Conroy.\n> Keynote Address by US Senator Jeff Merkley.\n> Closing Interfaith Prayer and Blessing of Oregon’s Waters\, by Imam Abdulah Polovina\, Rabbi Benjamin Barnett\, The Rev. Linda Jaramillo\, and Navneet Kaur.

SUMMARY:2020 Collins Summit: Shalom in Divided Times
DESCRIPTION:It’s no secret we are living in unprecedented and divided times. Racial unrest\, political tensions and COVID-19 have impacted nearly every aspect of our lives. What do shalom and unity look like in 2020? Shalom is a Hebrew word that means wholeness\, harmony and peace. It’s a complex idea\, often oversimplified\, similar to the way “unity” becomes a euphemism for sameness. \nThrough a virtual format\, we will explore these racial\, political and social divisions\, asking how we bring our whole selves to the table and stay engaged in light of our differences\, not in spite of them. \nThe Summit will include a lecture from Lisa Sharon Harper\, a live Q&A\, and the opportunity to hear from members of the Common Table and their important work. \n  \nFEATURING \nLisa Sharon Harper\nA prolific speaker\, writer and activist\, Ms. Harper is the founder and president of FreedomRoad.us. She is one of today’s leading voices on the topics of poverty\, racial and gender justice\, and transformational civic engagement. Learn more. \nThe Common Table\nAn Oregon-wide collection of interfaith leaders who have committed to learning more about one another\, trusting one another and standing together—even in the midst of real differences. Learn from this groundbreaking effort to cultivate shalom and create real unity. Learn more. \n  \nONLINE FORMAT\nWatch on your computer\, phone\, tablet or smart TV.\n7 to 8:30 p.m.\, Wednesday\, Nov. 18\, 2020.\nRegistration fee: $10 (scholarships available). \n  \nABOUT THE COLLINS SUMMIT\nSince 1967\, the Collins Summit (previously the Collins Lecture) has explored the intersection of faith\, ethics and public life. SUMMARY:Creation Justice Webinar 6: CreatureKind
DESCRIPTION:Care for creation intersects with racial justice and the health of the soil\, water and air. This work looks unique in different parts of the state based on the people who live there\, ways the land has been used\, and species and landscape elements present in each region. We will learn about some of Oregon’s environmental justice concerns and the organizations working on them through a series of six webinars this summer and fall. \nThe sixth webinar will feature representatives from CreatureKind. Their mission is to encourage Christians to recognize faith-based reasons for caring about the wellbeing of fellow animal creatures used for food\, and to take practical action in response. Their core message is that we are CreatureKind together with other animals\, and ought to be CreatureKind in how we treat them. \nRegister Now

SUMMARY:EMO/OIPL Creation Justice Webinar 6: EcoFaith Recovery
DESCRIPTION:Care for creation intersects with racial justice and the health of the soil\, water and air. This work looks unique in different parts of the state based on the people who live there\, ways the land has been used\, and species and landscape elements present in each region. We will learn about some of Oregon’s environmental justice concerns and the organizations working on them through a series of six webinars this summer. \nThe sixth webinar in this series will feature representatives from EcoFaith Recovery\, speaking on “Just Vote: Personal Stories for Community Action.” EcoFaith Recovery is a faith-based leadership development effort grounded near the confluence of the Columbia and Willamette Rivers and reaching out to other parts of the Pacific Northwest for the purpose of revitalizing congregational ministries to participate in the healing of creation. \nREGISTER NOW.

SUMMARY:Community of Creation Learning Cohort: From cultural collapse to re-inhabitation
DESCRIPTION:This four-month study will offer a unique opportunity to reframe many of the environmental and cultural crises currently facing humanity\, while exploring the time-tested solutions offered to us by Indigenous Wisdom. Led by the Eloheh Indigenous Center for Earth Justice\, in partnership with Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon and EcoFaith Recovery\, this course will begin and end with in-person instruction from Randy and Edith Woodley (read their bios) onsite at the Eloheh Farm in Yamhill\, Ore. \nOnline classes will continue (October – January) on the first and third Wednesdays of each month\, with each “dinner discussion” reflecting on a different chapter of Randy Woodley’s Shalom and the Community of Creation: An Indigenous Vision. Through this process\, we will study the limitations and the breakdown of the western worldview\, examine the underlying values of indigenous wisdom\, and explore concrete strategies of “re-inhabitation.” \nSafety Note: Though we will look forward to gathering in-person during our opening and closing meetings at Eloheh Farm\, we will be observing an abundance of caution when it comes to social distancing. Please be prepared to observe strict protocols when it comes to wearing masks\, hand-washing/sanitizing\, and maintaining physical distance. Regular Wednesday meetings will all be held via zoom. \nWHO: This is a community for leaders who want to:\n> De-center whiteness and learn to include everyone at the table.\n> Learn from perspectives that draw from ancient wisdom.\n> Grow in understanding an Indigenous worldview and deconstruct their Western worldview.\n> Learn a theology of place.>\n> Receive the opportunity to be mentored by an Indigenous leader\, activist\, scholar\, distinguished speaker\, wisdom keeper\, theologian\, and farmer. \nWe need leaders that are not recreating old systems\, but learning decolonized and Indigenized ways of leading. Historically Christian have been formed in white supremacy and settler colonialism – we need a new DNA introduced into these systems in order to move forward in a sustainable and just way. \n  \nApply for the Community of Creation Learning Cohort. \n  \nREGISTRATION: $1\,000 donation to Eloheh Indigenous Center for Earth Justice. (Scholarship assistance can be requested through our online application form.)\nNOTE: All proceeds will go toward re-building Eloheh Indigenous Center for Earth Justice / Eloheh Farm. All facilitators\, including Randy & Edith\, are donating their time. So that we can accommodate as many participants as possible\, we encourage those who can pay more do so as a contribution to our scholarship fund. \n\nSCHEDULE\nSunday\, Sept. 27\, 2 – 5 p.m. In-Person Instruction and Opening Ceremony with Randy & Edith Woodley at Eloheh Indigenous Center for Earth Justice near Yamhill\, Ore. SUMMARY:Expanding Emotional Intelligence (virtual workshop)
DESCRIPTION:We live in a society where most of us have never had any formal education about emotions – let’s change that! We’ll learn what emotions are\, how they work\, and how to deal more effectively with our own emotions and other people’s. Other topics include mind/body connection\, “good/bad” emotions\, thoughts versus feelings\, and how emotions relate to safety and danger. \nIf you have been told that you are out of touch with your emotions\, are “too emotional\,” or just want to understand yourself and your loved ones better\, come explore the world of emotions with a licensed therapist with 20 years of clinical experience. \nAbout Tod Fiste\, LPC: Tod is a Licensed Professional Counselor with a Master’s degree from the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco. He has been working with clients since 2000. He incorporates Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)\, mindfulness\, and personality theory in his work with clients. With most clients\, Tod pays special attention to relationship\, regardless of whether it is couples\, group\, family\, or individual counseling. This is because humans are fundamentally relational beings\, and relationships contain our strongest sources of both hurt and healing. And all relationships reflect and reveal your relationship with yourself. \nPre-registration required. Workshop fee must be paid at time of registration. Workshop fee is non-refundable: fee will remain a workshop credit for six months. The cost is $30 (Hardship scholarships available). Register online at nwcounseling.org/services/workshops or by phone at (503) 253-0964. A Zoom link will be sent day of workshop.

SUMMARY:Dining Out For Life
DESCRIPTION:Dine out (or take out) and support our partner restaurants! \nDining Out For Life comes to Portland every April. This year’s event did not happen as planned due to the pandemic. Instead\, we are holding a different event during the week of September 14\, focused on supporting our restaurants. We want to support them all the time\, but especially during this week\, as we highlight our generous restaurants who are struggling right now. We hope Dining Out For Life will be back in regular form next year\, but for now let’s show our restaurants our love! \nWe are not asking our partner restaurants to contribute to Dining Out For Life Portland this year. This event is strictly to support them. However\, if you feel moved and are able\, we will accept donations to Dining Out For Life Portland with the proceeds going directly to EMO’s HIV Day Center and OHSU’s Partnership Project. Our services have continued during COVID\, as have the needs of our clients. Please use the donation form below. \nThank you to our Dining Out For Life Sponsors: National sponsors Suburu and Ponaman Healthcare Consulting; local sponsors Grapevine Outdoor\, Lamar Advertising\, N2 Publishing\, The Oregonian\, Portland Monthly\, and Schoenfeld & Schoenfeld P.C. \nA special thank you to our Honorary Chair Rose City Pride Bands. \nAnd thank you to our partner restaurants: 3 Doors Down\, Bar Carlo\, Bridges Cafe and Catering\, Extracto Roastery & Coffeehouse\, Ford Food & Drink (now closed)\, Hale Pele\, McMenamins (17 locations)\, Peter’s Bar & Grill\, The Pie Spot\, Portofino\, Red Sauce\, Redwood\, and Rose and Thistle. \nWe also ask that you support all Black Owned Restaurants as you are able by dining in or taking out.
