SUMMARY:Anxiety: A Basic Management Guide (virtual workshop)
DESCRIPTION:Many of our lives have been upended by the COVID-19 pandemic. We have lost jobs\, educational opportunities\, and social support networks. If that wasn’t enough\, we now have the fear and worry subsequent to the death of George Floyd. \nWhat does a person do with the fear? How does a person manage the worry? Where does a person turn for help? This interactive workshop will provide you with some basic tools for identifying sources of anxiety in your life and methods of coping with anxiety. \nAbout Mark Walker\, LPC: Mark (he/his/him pronouns) is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Oregon with a Master of Science degree in Counselor Education from the University of Wyoming. He has worked as a professional counselor since 1994. Mark is also a member of the National Board of Certified Counselors. Mark uses solution-focused therapy\, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)\, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and an eclectic mix of other therapies to achieve the results his clients are seeking. \nPre-registration required. SUMMARY:Facing the Challenges of Caregiving: A Workshop for Current and Former Caregivers
DESCRIPTION:It’s one thing to nurse a family member or friend back to health after an injury or medical procedure. But caring for a loved one with chronic or terminal illness can feel like too much to bear. Fear\, anxiety\, confusion\, disappointment\, uncertainty\, sadness\, and anger can sap emotional strength and undermine spiritual foundations. Layer in grief\, guilt\, shame\, underlying relational issues\, or outside stressors\, and even the most committed caregiver can be overwhelmed. This workshop offers hope and help for both current caregivers and those whose caregiving has come to an end. \nThis workshop will be held at The Northwest Catholic Counseling Center. SUMMARY:Hearing the Cries: Healing Injustice
DESCRIPTION:Hearing the Cries: Healing Injustice brings a holistic lens to being in relationship with our justice-involved neighbors: helping people of faith and goodwill\, in the words of Bryan Stevenson\, “get proximate” with those members of our society who have lived experience of the justice system. We hope to frame participants’ understanding of the “issue” of criminal justice as a matter of faith in action. \nAs people of faith\, we know that our communities bring together people beyond the labels placed on us by the justice system and wider society. We are more than victims\, offenders or community members—we may be all three—and our congregations may include all of us. But the ways the justice system brings people together—and keeps them separate—are different from the ways that a faith community brings people together. How are we to live together as a community? How do we resolve the inherent conflict in this existence as one body of many distinct members? \nSpecifically\, we seek to empower community in Restorative Justice\, stepping up to the responsibilities it has to those in the roles of “offender” and “victim\,” and taking accountability for the harms society has perpetrated and perpetuated. These harms include those created by a justice system that distances people from their neighbors and adds layers of harm instead of resolving conflict in a just way. \nWe recognize a theology of interconnection and interdependence. Our need for one another\, in mutually beneficial and healing relationships\, happens to be at the core of pro-social thinking\, as well. We also recognize the interconnection of criminal justice issues with public health concerns\, homelessness and housing inaccessibility\, human trafficking\, trauma\, recovery\, immigration\, and more. Portland Composer Theresa Koon has adapted Emma Lazarus’ famous poem inscribed on the Statue of Liberty in an anthem for choir that will soon be heard around the world. Mother of Exiles will be recorded in Prague in December 2019 and released by PARMA Recordings in Spring 2020. \nMany of us don’t have the temperament to run for public office or knock on doors. This project is the composer’s way of using music to honor the needs of people who have been dishonored around the world. DESCRIPTION:This year marks the 25th annual United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP25). Previous conferences have produced some of the most well-known and comprehensive international agreements for setting greenhouse gas emissions targets and increasing the ability of countries to adapt to the adverse effects of climate change. \nCOP25 will take place this December in Madrid\, Spain\, and communities like Portland are seeking to be involved in the conference via a series of virtual bridges. The Portland bridge includes two public gatherings that provide an opportunity for local people to experience what is taking place at COP25 and to have an impact on the proceedings by communicating with observers\, delegates\, and others attending the conference\, as well as hearing from other local people doing climate work related to the international effort. \nAlso on Monday Dec. 2\, 7 to 9 pm\, at OMSI. \nBoth events are free and open to the public\, and registration is required. \nView more details.
