DESCRIPTION:As Oregonians\, we care deeply about the most vulnerable\, especially Oregon’s children. Yet\, Oregon has the highest rate of K-12 homelessness in the country\, and the second-highest rate of youth who are homeless and separated from their parents. \nAt Youth Homelessness Advocacy Day\, we will hear about legislation that will address youth homelessness. Hosted and sponsored by Portland’s historic Vancouver Avenue First Baptist Church\, the celebration is scheduled for the weekend immediately prior to Martin Luther King Junior Day. DESCRIPTION:Join Israel360 for an evening with Rabbi Hanan Schlesinger and Shadi Abu Awwad of Shorashim/ Judur/ Roots\, A Local Palestinian Israeli Initiative for Understanding\, Nonviolence\, and Transformation. \nRabbi Hanan Schlesinger is and Orthodox rabbi and teacher and a Zionist settler who was transformed by his friendship with Ali Abu Awwad\, a leading Palestinian nonviolence activist. The two were part of the core group that founded Roots in the beginning of 2014. Shadi Abu Awwad created the Roots youth program and was its first director. PDX will involve people of all ages\, religions\, ethnicities\, genders\, and more coming together\, working side-by-side\, and creating artistic tokens of kindness to take home and give away\, anonymously (or not). This means neighbors might receive a red rose with an attached note of kindness on their doorsteps or the tops of their mailboxes. Strangers might find a painted rock with a message of kindness in a restaurant flower pot\, a park bench\, or even an elevator. Little Library users might find kindness bookmarks tucked into their next read. A third wave of liberation theology turns to the lived experience of people already facing global violence as a testimony of life in the face of death. These communities draw on emerging and ancient spiritualities that grow out of their contexts. DESCRIPTION:The Soul Box Project is hosting a free screening of Behind the Bullet to deepen awareness of untold stories from the U.S. gunfire epidemic. Many thanks to director Heidi Yewman for embracing this partnership. \nThis full length film takes an intimate\, non-polarizing look at how taking a life forever changed four people emotionally\, psychologically and spiritually. They describe the moral injury that comes after a self-defense\, accidental or unintentional shooting\, offering a new and unbiased perspective on gun violence. \nFollowing the Q & A with the film’s director and Soul Box founder\, Leslie Lee\, there will be an opportunity to participate in a Soul Box Procession through Multnomah Village. This will be similar to when 36\,000 Soul Boxes — representing the number of lives lost to gunfire in the United States in 2018 — were carried into the Oregon State Capitol last February.
