SUMMARY:PDX Virtual Bridge to COP25
DESCRIPTION:This year marks the 25th annual United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP25). Previous conferences have produced some of the most well-known and comprehensive international agreements for setting greenhouse gas emissions targets and increasing the ability of countries to adapt to the adverse effects of climate change. \nCOP25 will take place this December in Madrid\, Spain\, and communities like Portland are seeking to be involved in the conference via a series of virtual bridges. The Portland bridge includes two public gatherings that provide an opportunity for local people to experience what is taking place at COP25 and to have an impact on the proceedings by communicating with observers\, delegates\, and others attending the conference\, as well as hearing from other local people doing climate work related to the international effort. \nAlso on Saturday Dec. 7\, 10 am to 12 pm\, at Ocean BlueCOP Program at Lewis & Clark College\, Olin Hall 301. \nBoth events are free and open to the public\, and registration is required. \nView more details.

The two were part of the core group that founded Roots in the beginning of 2014. Shadi Abu Awwad created the Roots youth program and was its first director. PDX will involve people of all ages\, religions\, ethnicities\, genders\, and more coming together\, working side-by-side\, and creating artistic tokens of kindness to take home and give away\, anonymously (or not). This means neighbors might receive a red rose with an attached note of kindness on their doorsteps or the tops of their mailboxes. Strangers might find a painted rock with a message of kindness in a restaurant flower pot\, a park bench\, or even an elevator. Little Library users might find kindness bookmarks tucked into their next read. DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE SUMMIT\nExplore a method of listening at the margins of the global community and in our own lives in order to build resilience and resistance for these times. \nIn a world of increasing fear and violence\, how can we build networks of resistance rooted in our spiritual traditions? A third wave of liberation theology turns to the lived experience of people already facing global violence as a testimony of life in the face of death. These communities draw on emerging and ancient spiritualities that grow out of their contexts. Mendoza-Alvarez’s most recent work has examined what resurrection can mean in a context of thousands of disappeared and murdered in Mexico. \nPresenters will include The Rev. Dr. Sara Rosenau (Waverly United Church of Christ). SUMMARY:The Soul Box Project presents screening of "Behind the Bullet"
DESCRIPTION:The Soul Box Project is hosting a free screening of Behind the Bullet to deepen awareness of untold stories from the U.S. gunfire epidemic. Many thanks to director Heidi Yewman for embracing this partnership. \nThis full length film takes an intimate\, non-polarizing look at how taking a life forever changed four people emotionally\, psychologically and spiritually. They describe the moral injury that comes after a self-defense\, accidental or unintentional shooting\, offering a new and unbiased perspective on gun violence. \nFollowing the Q & A with the film’s director and Soul Box founder\, Leslie Lee\, there will be an opportunity to participate in a Soul Box Procession through Multnomah Village. This will be similar to when 36\,000 Soul Boxes — representing the number of lives lost to gunfire in the United States in 2018 — were carried into the Oregon State Capitol last February. DESCRIPTION:View 6\,000 origami boxes representing the number of people killed by gunfire every two months in the United States. Each 3- by 3-inch Soul Box carries the name of a gunfire victim\, an image\, or a message of protest or hope. \nThe Soul Box Project displays thousands of Soul Boxes in public spaces to illustrate the number of victims of gunfire violence\, defense\, accidents and suicides. By provoking an emotional response to the number of lives torn apart by gunfire\, The Soul Box Project aims to empower people to choose actions regarding responsible gun use that reflect their values\, priorities and beliefs. So far\, over to 67\,000 Soul Boxes have been collected from around the country. Sometimes clergy members aren’t aware of the veterans in their congregation or how they might help a veteran and their family following deployment. Clergy may recognize veterans who are struggling in their return to civilian life\, but not know how to support them. The National Chaplain Center of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)\, VA-Clergy Partnership for Rural Veterans\, and Portland Veterans Health Administration Chaplain Services invite clergy of all religions to attend a free interactive training. \nObjectives include: \n\nIdentifying potential conflicts between civilian and military cultures.\nIdentifying actions community clergy can take to assist military personnel and their families with a healthy adjustment to a civilian culture.\nTypes of common military events that can cause adjustment problems for military personnel and the psychiatric and psychological responses that often follow.\nIdentifying the relationship between spirituality and “meaning making.”\nThe importance of Personal Narratives and Past\, Present and Future Stories.\nIdentifying pastoral responses and resources for clergy and their congregations.\n\nThe same training will also be held in Salem on August 29\, from 8:30 am to 4 pm\, at the Salem Health Hospital\, 890 Oak St. SE. \nSeating is limited\, so please register ASAP. It is a day of worship dedicated to hearing the stories of those impacted directly by the justice system\, and to consider our shared responsibility to help healing take place. It is a day to make connections between our faith traditions and the current legal system we are part of. \nIn our religious communities\, we realize that the labels used by the justice system (“victim\,” “offender\,” “inmate\,” etc.) do not fully capture our experiences as humans. Our communities have crime survivors and perpetrators of crime; they have family members of the incarcerated and staff who work in corrections and the courts. DESCRIPTION:Caution: Violent extremism is rising! Is your congregation safe?\n\n\nChurch\, synagogue\, mosque\, temple\, and other congregational leaders and security departments are urged to attend this special emergency training\, briefing\, and active shooter safety presentation to prepare places of worship for potential attacks and violent extremism\, such as the shooting at the Chabad of Poway in San Diego and the massacres at Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh\, Christchurch Mosques in New Zealand\, and Emmanuel AME Church in Charleston. \n\n\nThe FBI\, US Attorney’s Office\, Portland Police Bureau\, and other authorities will provide the most current information\, data\, and tools available. The training is free and open to all leaders from houses of worship. \n\nLaw enforcement will present crucial and potentially life-saving information and surveilled intelligence about specific trends and potential threats.
