SUMMARY:Amplify Kindness! PDX
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public\, although registration is required\, Amplify Kindness! PDX will involve people of all ages\, religions\, ethnicities\, genders\, and more coming together\, working side-by-side\, and creating artistic tokens of kindness to take home and give away\, anonymously (or not). This means neighbors might receive a red rose with an attached note of kindness on their doorsteps or the tops of their mailboxes. Strangers might find a painted rock with a message of kindness in a restaurant flower pot\, a park bench\, or even an elevator. Little Library users might find kindness bookmarks tucked into their next read. Ultimately\, spreading random messages of kindness fuels a feel-good spark and a sense of community—for the giver as well as the receiver. \nDownload flyer. \nSupplies will be provided\, but if you have them\, please bring markers\, pens\, paper\, and the like to use and share with others. No prior artistic expertise is required. \nThe Amplify Kindness! PDX event will begin with inspirational words from a few speakers including Sen. Elizabeth Steiner Hayward and Jan Musgrove Elfers\, President of Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon. In a June Op-Ed article in the Oregonian on the antidote to hate crimes\, Elfers wrote: “In addition to our prayers\, we are compelled to act. Given the nature of this growing threat\, we recognize that a more proactive response is required beyond the polarization and gridlock of our political system. We believe that the antidote to hate crimes is friend-making.” \nPositive Charge’s Amplify Kindness! PDX basically is a proactive\, “friend-making” event. We believe in the therapeutic value of doing something kind for another and that intentional acts of kindness generate bonds between people\, help to build bridges of education and tolerance\, and ultimately create peace in our world. \nPlease join us in our mission and AMPLIFY KINDNESS! \nNOTE: When you RSVP for this event\, please complete an RSVP for each individual who will be attending\, so we know numbers and can plan accordingly. Thank you! \nPositiveChargePDX.org

DESCRIPTION:There will be a free public showing of the award-winning documentary film Citizen Jane: Battle for the City. It will be followed by a discussion\, to be introduced by Portland historian Chet Orloff. \nThe film covers the conflicting visions of Jane Jacobs and Robert Moses for the future of New York City in the 1960s. SUMMARY:2019 Collins Summit\, "Listening at the Margins: Ancestral Wisdom\, Spiritual Resistance\, and Hope in Times of Trauma"
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE SUMMIT\nExplore a method of listening at the margins of the global community and in our own lives in order to build resilience and resistance for these times. \nIn a world of increasing fear and violence\, how can we build networks of resistance rooted in our spiritual traditions? A third wave of liberation theology turns to the lived experience of people already facing global violence as a testimony of life in the face of death. These communities draw on emerging and ancient spiritualities that grow out of their contexts. They also share wisdom for our own spirituality. \nThe 2019 Collins Summit will be an opportunity to hear about and practice methods of listening that build strength for social justice work in our local communities. \nREGISTRATION\nSeminar\, Dinner & Lecture: $60 general\, $30 student with ID.\nEvening Lecture only: $25 general\, $15 student with ID. \nRegister Now \n\nGUEST SPEAKER\nThe speaker for the evening Collins Lecture will be Dr. Carlos Mendoza-Alvarez\, a Dominican priest and internationally known liberation theologian. His theological investigation illuminates the ancestral wisdom\, yearning for justice\, and hope that emerges from the resistance and resilience of the victims and survivors of global violence. Mendoza-Alvarez’s most recent work has examined what resurrection can mean in a context of thousands of disappeared and murdered in Mexico. \nPresenters will include The Rev. Dr. Cassie Trentaz (Warner Pacific University)\, Juan Carlos La Puente (Intercultural and Interreligious Mission – ELCA Oregon Synod)\, and The Rev. Dr. Sara Rosenau (Waverly United Church of Christ). The faith leaders have been working to support leaders and institutions in how to root their efforts for justice and peace in a relational culture that fosters community dialogue and discernment in communion with the forces of Life coming from the margins as a source of compassion and collective resistance. They have been working with Dr. Mendoza-Alvarez in an intercultural initiative called Spiritual and Theological Mutual Accompaniment that started in 2016. \n\nSCHEDULE\nSeminar (download event program)\n12 – 1 p.m. Registration | Check-in (Sanctuary)\n1 – 2:15 p.m. Welcome | Plenary Session\n2:30 – 4 p.m. Listening & Dialogue Session: Breakout sessions include stories from the margins and dialogue with faith and social justice leaders.\n> Immigration Justice (with Interfaith Movement for Immigrant Justice)\n> Environmental Justice (with EcoFaith Recovery)\n> Justice for the Houseless (Leven community Housing Coalition)\n> Transforming Institutions for Justice (with institutional leaders from the Oregon Synod ELCA and Oregon-Idaho Conference of the United Methodist Church)\n4:15 – 5:15 p.m. Plenary Session\n5:30 p.m. Dinner (Seminar/Lecture registrants only) \nCollins Lecture (Sanctuary)\n6 – 7 p.m. Registration | Check-in\n7 – 9:15 p.m. Lecture | Dialogue | Q & A \n\nPUBLIC TRANSPORTATION & PARKING\nThere is limited parking at First United Methodist Church. SUMMARY:The Soul Box Project presents screening of "Behind the Bullet"
DESCRIPTION:The Soul Box Project is hosting a free screening of Behind the Bullet to deepen awareness of untold stories from the U.S. gunfire epidemic. Many thanks to director Heidi Yewman for embracing this partnership. \nThis full length film takes an intimate\, non-polarizing look at how taking a life forever changed four people emotionally\, psychologically and spiritually. They describe the moral injury that comes after a self-defense\, accidental or unintentional shooting\, offering a new and unbiased perspective on gun violence. \nFollowing the Q & A with the film’s director and Soul Box founder\, Leslie Lee\, there will be an opportunity to participate in a Soul Box Procession through Multnomah Village. This will be similar to when 36\,000 Soul Boxes — representing the number of lives lost to gunfire in the United States in 2018 — were carried into the Oregon State Capitol last February. We will process out of the Multnomah Arts Center into Multnomah Village and its First Friday Artwalk\, ending the evening on a note of hope and solidarity. \nRegister for this free film screening.

SUMMARY:The Soul Box Project: Art Revealing the Gunfire Epidemic
DESCRIPTION:View 6\,000 origami boxes representing the number of people killed by gunfire every two months in the United States. Each 3- by 3-inch Soul Box carries the name of a gunfire victim\, an image\, or a message of protest or hope. \nThe Soul Box Project displays thousands of Soul Boxes in public spaces to illustrate the number of victims of gunfire violence\, defense\, accidents and suicides. By provoking an emotional response to the number of lives torn apart by gunfire\, The Soul Box Project aims to empower people to choose actions regarding responsible gun use that reflect their values\, priorities and beliefs. So far\, over to 67\,000 Soul Boxes have been collected from around the country. Visitors to the exhibit can fold a Soul Box and add it to the display. \nView the free exhibit between 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. on weekdays through October 17; closed weekends.

SUMMARY:Collaborating in Care: Ministry and Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:If you are a faith leader\, you and your house of worship are an important contact point for Veterans in your community. Sometimes clergy members aren’t aware of the veterans in their congregation or how they might help a veteran and their family following deployment. Clergy may recognize veterans who are struggling in their return to civilian life\, but not know how to support them. The National Chaplain Center of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)\, VA-Clergy Partnership for Rural Veterans\, and Portland Veterans Health Administration Chaplain Services invite clergy of all religions to attend a free interactive training. \nObjectives include: \n\nIdentifying potential conflicts between civilian and military cultures.\nIdentifying actions community clergy can take to assist military personnel and their families with a healthy adjustment to a civilian culture.\nTypes of common military events that can cause adjustment problems for military personnel and the psychiatric and psychological responses that often follow.\nIdentifying the relationship between spirituality and “meaning making.”\nThe importance of Personal Narratives and Past\, Present and Future Stories.\nIdentifying pastoral responses and resources for clergy and their congregations.\n\nThe same training will also be held in Salem on August 29\, from 8:30 am to 4 pm\, at the Salem Health Hospital\, 890 Oak St. SE. \nSeating is limited\, so please register ASAP. Reserve your seat for the training in Portland or Salem by contacting Chaplain Rachel Mikaelsen at (503) 220-8262\, ext. 57028\, or Rachel.mikaelsen@va.gov. \n

SUMMARY:Criminal Justice Sabbath 2019
DESCRIPTION:Join people of faith across Oregon – and beyond – in holding a Criminal Justice Sabbath on the weekend of July 12-14\, 2019.\nIf you can’t join in on that weekend\, host a Criminal Justice Sabbath any day – and let us know when you do\, at cosa@emoregon.org! \nCriminal Justice Sabbath is a time for faith communities to lift up ways the justice system impacts us all. It is a day of worship dedicated to hearing the stories of those impacted directly by the justice system\, and to consider our shared responsibility to help healing take place. It is a day to make connections between our faith traditions and the current legal system we are part of. \nIn our religious communities\, we realize that the labels used by the justice system (“victim\,” “offender\,” “inmate\,” etc.) do not fully capture our experiences as humans. Our communities have crime survivors and perpetrators of crime; they have family members of the incarcerated and staff who work in corrections and the courts. On Criminal Justice Sabbath\, we remember the unique stories of how people experience the legal system – while recognizing that we are all one community\, together. \nVisit EMO’s Criminal Justice Ministries page to download the Criminal Justice Sabbath Worship Guide 2019 for worship\, preaching\, adult education and action for a Criminal Justice Sabbath in your community. \nCriminal Justice Sabbath resources are available as a project of Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon in partnership with the Episcopal Diocese of Oregon. If you have suggestions for worship or educational resources for future Criminal Justice Sabbath guides\, especially resources from your own religious tradition\, please let us know. \n

SUMMARY:Emergency Training for Faith Communities in Response to Violent Extremism
DESCRIPTION:Caution: Violent extremism is rising! Is your congregation safe?\n\n\nChurch\, synagogue\, mosque\, temple\, and other congregational leaders and security departments are urged to attend this special emergency training\, briefing\, and active shooter safety presentation to prepare places of worship for potential attacks and violent extremism\, such as the shooting at the Chabad of Poway in San Diego and the massacres at Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh\, Christchurch Mosques in New Zealand\, and Emmanuel AME Church in Charleston. \n\n\nThe FBI\, US Attorney’s Office\, Portland Police Bureau\, and other authorities will provide the most current information\, data\, and tools available. The training is free and open to all leaders from houses of worship. \n\nLaw enforcement will present crucial and potentially life-saving information and surveilled intelligence about specific trends and potential threats. Notwithstanding existing measures and personnel a facility may already have in place\, including off-duty officers\, these authorities have up-to-date information and resources needed to bolster current security efforts. All faith leadership teams are urged to attend. \n\n\nFor more information\, contact OneCOP at (503) 809-0990. \nThe “One Congregation One Precinct” (OneCOP) initiative facilitates positive\, ongoing partnerships between local law enforcement agencies and diverse congregations of every faith tradition. This includes organizing various crime and violence prevention/solving efforts\, hosting public safety briefings\, providing cultural and sensitivity trainings\, conducting officer appreciation events\, holding community safety workshops\, and hosting forums focused on bettering the relationship between cops and citizens. SUMMARY:Summer in the Forest Screening
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free screening of “Summer in the Forest\,” a film about a L’Arche community in France\, followed by a reception and panel discussion. The life and legacy of Jean Vanier\, who passed away peacefully May 7\, 2019\, will also be celebrated. \nAbout “Summer in the Forest”: Like countless others\, Philippe\, Michel\, Andre and Patrick were labeled “idiots\,” locked away and forgotten in violent asylums\, until the 1960s\, when the young philosopher Jean Vanier took a stand and secured their release – the first time in history that anyone had beaten the system. Together they created L’Arche\, a commune at the edge of a beautiful forest near Paris. A quiet revolution was born.

SUMMARY:Free Trip to Egypt Film Screening: #PledgeToListen Day of Unity
DESCRIPTION:On June 12\, “Free Trip to Egypt” opens nationwide for a one-day-only-event in 500 theaters across in the United States for our #PledgeToListen Day of Unity. The screening will be followed by a telecast live-panel discussion from Washington DC featuring Tarek Mounib\, politicians\, and thought leaders. \nThe timely new documentary follows the journey of Tarek Mounib (a Canadian-Egyptian Muslim) who decides to reach out to the very people who fear him. He travels across the United States to find Americans concerned about an Islamic threat and makes them an intriguing offer: a free trip to Egypt. \nThe initial reactions range from disbelief to hostility\, but eventually a diverse group from various backgrounds is selected\, including a teacher\, police officer\, Marine veteran\, single mom\, preacher and beauty pageant queen. All have their preconceptions but are receptive and courageous enough to embark on the adventure of a lifetime. \nSoon enough\, the travelers arrive in Egypt where the Americans are paired with local Egyptians just as diverse as they are. The result is provocative\, surprising\, funny\, magical\, emotional\, revealing\, enlightening and ultimately life-changing — in other words\, all things human — in this profoundly original and inspirational feature-length documentary. \nFind screening locations at fathomevents.com/events/free-trip-to-egypt \nLear more about the film at freetriptoegypt.com

SUMMARY:Hearing the Cries 2019
DESCRIPTION:Hearing the Cries for Justice is a regional summit to equip people of faith and goodwill to support their neighbors impacted by the legal system. This one-and-a-half day event will bring together “experts” in the field—including those with lived experience\, alongside professionals—to share opportunities for people of faith to help change hearts\, minds and society itself. Over a series of summits held in different corners of the state—starting in Eugene—we will connect people locally to build up the movement for justice. \nOn Friday evening\, a screening of the documentary film “Thirteenth” by Ava duVernay will be held at First United Methodist Church\, followed by discussion. This event is open to the public and included in your registration for the summit. \nOn Saturday\, our focus will be equipping faith communities for the work of serving people impacted by the justice system. Two tracks of emphasis will offer training in prison reentry mentorship and public policy advocacy. There will also be ample time for networking among faith communities already serving this population. \nTogether\, we will shape a vision where Oregon’s faith communities are called to engage with the justice system and those impacted by it.
