DESCRIPTION:When you dine at a participating restaurant on Thursday\, April 25\, between 20 to 35 percent of your bill goes directly to EMO’s HIV Day Center & OHSU’s Partnership Project. Both organizations work closely together to provide vital programs & services to individuals living with HIV in the Portland metro area. \nEMO’s HIV Day Center\, celebrating its 27th anniversary this year\, is the oldest multi-service drop in center for low income individuals infected and affected by HIV in the United States. The Center serves approximately 300 people yearly\, providing them with two hot meals a day\, information and referral services\, computer and internet access\, phones\, shower and laundry facilities as well as volunteer professionals who provide services such as massage therapy\, acupuncture and haircuts. \nThe Daily Bread Express program of the HIV Day Center delivers weekly meals and supplemental groceries to more than 60 homebound individuals. \nPartnership Project is entering its 24th year of providing critical services to HIV positive individuals in the Portland Metro area. Last year 700 people living with HIV were served through our HIV programs. DESCRIPTION:Hearing the Cries for Justice is a regional summit to equip people of faith and goodwill to support their neighbors impacted by the legal system. This one-and-a-half day event will bring together “experts” in the field—including those with lived experience\, alongside professionals—to share opportunities for people of faith to help change hearts\, minds and society itself. Over a series of summits held in different corners of the state—starting in Eugene—we will connect people locally to build up the movement for justice. \nOn Friday evening\, a screening of the documentary film “Thirteenth” by Ava duVernay will be held at First United Methodist Church\, followed by discussion. This event is open to the public and included in your registration for the summit. \nOn Saturday\, our focus will be equipping faith communities for the work of serving people impacted by the justice system. Two tracks of emphasis will offer training in prison reentry mentorship and public policy advocacy. DESCRIPTION:Amid the headlines announcing disheartening stories about global warming\, there is good news—while the challenges are real\, so are the solutions. \nAward-winning Portland urban architect George Crandall suggests practical responses in his groundbreaking book\, Fixing Your City: Creating Thriving Neighborhoods and Adapting to a Changing World. \nIn an interactive presentation\, Crandall will introduce a radical transformation strategy that will tackle the city’s toughest challenges\, resulting in healthy places to live\, work and play. He will give a compelling commentary that: \n\nIdentifies a planning process that offers solutions to critical urban issues\, using examples from the city of Portland.\nAddresses climate change and congestion with an integrated land use/transportation strategy that reduces transportation carbon emissions by 50 percent by shortening and eliminating auto trips.\nProposes a new class of professionals\, urban architects\, who would design cities that work\, both for residents and for our endangered earth.\n\nFixing Your City is finding a warm reception in Portland. Mayor Ted Wheeler has said in regard to Crandall’s proposals: “I believe that this (transformation) strategy will provide our city with innovative solutions for dealing with population growth\, congestion\, and global warming.” \nBill McKibben\, author of The End of Nature\, and founder of 350.org\, says this about Fixing Your City: “Cities are going to have to transform themselves if we’re to make the progress we need in the climate fight—transform themselves to deal with the trouble now coming\, and transform themselves to cause less damage. George Crandall reminds us that along the way these kinds of repairs can also produce cities that are more fun to inhabit.” \nFor over 40 years\, George Crandall has been involved in the life of U.S. cities\, both as an architect and urban designer\, and as a passionate and dedicated citizen activist. In 1998\, he founded the Portland\, Ore.\, consulting firm Crandall Arambula\, the only firm in the nation that has the singular focus of revitalizing cities. Many of the firm’s projects have received awards for their innovative solutions to seemingly intractable problems. \nCrandall earned a Bachelor of Architecture and a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering\, both from the University of Arizona. An FAIA\, he has been active in numerous professional and civic organizations\, and lives in Portland. \nThis event is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:The Vigil will be held on National Homeless Person’s Memorial Day and the longest night of the year. The aims of the Vigil are to: \n\nRemember the 79 people who died outside on Portland streets in the past year.\nSupport the Foster Street Homeless Shelter opening in 2019.\nCall on Portland leaders to end punitive sweeps and over-policing of the homeless.\nCommit as a community to equitable access for the homeless of bathrooms\, garbage and safe overnight camping areas.\n\nWe will gather at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church at 5415 SE Powell at 5 p.m. Folks will walk in a silent procession for 3/4-mile to the Foster Street Shelter\, where the Vigil will take place. This event is being organized by 4 Lutheran churches – Bethlehem\, Central\, St. Mark’s and Pilgrim.

DESCRIPTION:The Urban League of Portland in partnership with other community-based organizations and the City of Portland\, is spearheading a project to honor Mulugeta Seraw (Mo͞o-lo͞o-ɡāt-ah sə-rou)\, 28-year old Ethiopian college student living in Portland\, Ore.\, who was murdered by racist skinheads outside of his apartment on Nov. 13\, 1988. Join us for a half-day conference on Tuesday\, Nov. 13\, 2018 – the 30th anniversary of Mulugeta’s death – to learn more about the history of anti-Black violence in Oregon and what steps we as community can take to address it. \nThe conference will include panel discussions\, Continuing Legal Education (CLE) for attorneys\, and community training on addressing hate.
