SUMMARY:World AIDS Day Fundraiser Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:Please join Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon’s HIV Services for our annual World AIDS Day Fundraiser Luncheon. This is an opportunity for us to honor and celebrate those in our community who live with HIV/AIDS\, and those who support the work we do at our HIV Day Center and Daily Bread Express. \nMany of the HIV Day Center’s most compelling and meaningful moments happen over a shared meal–and so we invite you to join us for a meal\, sponsored by and held at our neighboring Concordia University. Partners and supporters both new and old will have the chance to hear where this past year has taken HIV Services and where we are headed in 2019. We welcome all to this opportunity to give vital financial support to a beloved community resource. \nThere is no charge to attend the event\, but reservations are requested\, and donations will be gratefully accepted. \nReserve Now

SUMMARY:A Pilgrimage to the Chartres Labyrinth: Presentation\, discussion and guided meditation
DESCRIPTION:The Chartres Cathedral Labyrinth in France is the best persevered medieval labyrinth of the 80 labyrinths built in 11th and 12th century Europe. Pilgrimage was very important in medieval Europe and Chartres was a major stop for pilgrims walking the Camino de Santiago to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Pilgrimage is again popular in our time as a way to find guidance\, inner connection and meaning in our lives. The meandering labyrinth is an ideal place for reflection and meditation. \nPlease join Patricia Newton (labyrinth facilitator\, member of the Trinity Labyrinth Guild and Labyrinth Network Northwest) for a free presentation about her recent pilgrimage to Chartres and a discussion of labyrinths and pilgrimage. There will be a guided meditation and quiet time for you to consider the pilgrimages in your own life. \nThe beautiful Trinity Chartres style labyrinth in Trinity Episcopal Cathedral’s Kempton Hall will be open for a personal reflective pre-election day walk from 11 a.m. until 1:45 p.m. prior to the presentation. \n

SUMMARY:A Labor of Love: Facing the Challenges of Caregiving for a Spouse or Intimate Partner
DESCRIPTION:It’s one thing to promise faithfulness in sickness and in health\, but the reality of caring for a spouse with chronic or terminal illness can feel like too much to bear. It’s not just that the physical demands take such a toll. Fear\, anxiety\, confusion\, disappointment\, uncertainty\, sadness\, and anger can sap emotional strength and undermine spiritual foundations. Layer in grief\, guilt\, shame\, underlying relational issues\, or outside stressors\, and even the most committed caregiver can be overwhelmed. This workshop offers hope and help. Presenter Nancie Potter\, JD\, LMFT\, will address these issues and more with warmth\, expertise\, and understanding. Bring your questions! \nTo register\, call (503) 253-0964\, or register online at www.nwcounseloing.org/services/workshops.

SUMMARY:Forum on Income Inequality: How does this happen?
DESCRIPTION:JOIN US AS WE SCREEN ROBERT REICH’S DOCUMENTARY “SAVING CAPITALISM.” \nAmerica was once celebrated for and defined by its large and prosperous middle class. Now\, this middle class is shrinking and the country faces its greatest wealth disparity in eighty years. Why is the economic system that made America strong suddenly failing us\, and how can it be fixed? \nWe will watch a video produced and starring Robert Reich\, economist\, professor\, and former Secretary of Labor. Reich presents a paradigm-shifting\, examination of a political and economic status quo that no longer serves the people. Then Daniel Hauser from the Oregon Center for Public Policy will present information on Oregon’s own income disparities and the policies contributing to it. Following will be a discussion about what we’ve learned\, and what people of faith can do to address income inequality. \nThe free forum is a collaboration by Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon\, Oregon Coalition of Christian Voices\, Interfaith Alliance on Poverty\, and Portland Jobs with Justice Faith-Labor Committee.

SUMMARY:Film Screening & Discussion\, "Rikers: An American Jail"
DESCRIPTION:The United States is facing a crisis of mass incarceration with over 2.2 million people packed into its jails and prisons. To understand the human toll of this crisis\, Rikers Island is a good place to start. Of the more than 7\,500 people detained at Rikers Island on any given day\, almost 80% have not yet been found guilty or innocent of the charges they face. All are at risk in the pervasive culture of violence that forces people to come to terms with what they must do for their own survival. Rikers: An American Jail\, a riveting new award-winning documentary from Bill Moyers\, brings you face to face with men and women who have endured incarceration at Rikers Island. \nHosted by Ending the New Jim Crow (a Social Action Group of First Unitarian). \nFree event; donations welcomed.

SUMMARY:Our Voice\, Our World\, Our Future (Premiere Screening)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free premiere screening of “Our Voice\, Our World\, Our Future” — a short 20-minute film that explores the effects of climate change on low income communities in Portland\, Ore. \nOften unrecognized as a serious social concern in our region\, the film focuses on how climate change impacts the lives of Portland’s most impoverished and vulnerable people. Featuring two senior year projects\, “Our Voice\, Our World Our Future” gives voice to five senior high school students from Rosemary Anderson Alternative High School\, as they interweave their own stories with observations from community members and commentary from local healthcare professionals and emergency services specialists. A Q & A session with filmmaker Jane Turville and the students will follow the screening. \nThis project is made as a partnership between Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon\, Rosemary Anderson High School and Wagging Tale Productions\, LLC. We genuinely thank the East Multnomah Soil & Water Conservation District for generously supporting this project through their grant program. \nLimited seating. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; screening begins at 7 p.m.

SUMMARY:Canceled: “Signing Sabbath Weekend”
DESCRIPTION:You may have heard on the news about the Oregon ballot initiative that EMO is supporting to help prevent gun violence by banning the sale of assault weapons. With time already running short to collect the signatures needed to get our initiative on this fall’s ballot\, the Oregon Supreme Court sent our ballot title back to Attorney General Rosenblum. \nThe Lift Every Voice campaign has suspended signature gathering and will withdraw the petition from consideration for this year’s ballot. \nFor more details about the next stages of the campaign – and some inspiration about why we’ll keep working to end gun violence – watch the press conference held on June 28 at Augustana Lutheran Church.

SUMMARY:Road to Sheridan: Sunday Faith Response to Separated Families
DESCRIPTION:Clergy of ten Oregon churches have committed to participating in a Sunday worship service in response to immigrant children who have been separated from their families. We are asking all faith leaders and faith communities throughout Oregon to join us in Sheridan for this special moment of prayer-in-action. \nThe Sunday Service in Sheridan (called “The Road to Sheridan: Love Leads Us”) will include all the traditional worship elements (communion\, prayer\, music\, sermon\, etc.)\, but it will also include a direct ask of the Prison to allow ongoing clergy access to detainees so they can receive the pastoral care they need and have requested – and so that we can learn more about how they are being treated and whether or not they are being reunited with their children\, spouses and other family. \nNote that bringing your own chairs or blankets would be very helpful\, and packing your own sack lunch might be a good idea. \nThe service will take place just outside the Sheridan Prison. Main parking will be at Sheridan High School (433 S Bridge St\, Sheridan\, OR 97378)\, which is a little over a mile from the prison.
