There will be a free public showing of the award-winning documentary film Citizen Jane: Battle for the City. It will be followed by a discussion, to be introduced by Portland historian Chet Orloff.
The film covers the conflicting visions of Jane Jacobs and Robert Moses for the future of New York City in the 1960s. Moses represented massive slum clearance and redevelopment, while Jacobs saw cities as an orderly chaos that could be thriving amid old buildings and infrastructure.
The topic as particular relevance in Portland today as the city considers major changes to its pioneering neighborhood association system.
